Freezing Temperatures Can Cause Winter Water Damage

water damage IndianapolisEach season in Central Indiana has its own benefits…and its own risks. The winter is no exception. Many of us look forward to the holidays that accompany winter and the time with family and friends. Some also like the pretty views and cozy atmosphere created by cold, snowy weather.  Yet we are all aware of the downsides of unpredictable winter weather. One of these downsides can affect your home and life in a rather significant way. At Moore Restoration, we have seen firsthand the water damage Indianapolis residents experience due to winter weather and freezing temperatures. Here are two of the most common causes.

Frozen Pipes

Winter temperatures in Indiana can vary greatly from week to week or even from day to day. Most of us are happy for a few days of unseasonably warm temperatures. On the other hand, we often see those warm days turn quickly to unusually cold ones. These sub-zero temperatures can be dangerous not just to bodies but also to homes. Pipes within the exterior walls are especially vulnerable. Water within those pipes may become cold enough to freeze. As you know, water expands when it freezes, and since it has nowhere to go, it can cause pipes to burst. This allows water to flow into walls and onto floors, causing flooding and damage. Leaving faucets on with just a drip of water and keeping the doors open on cabinets which hold pipes can help avoid this water disaster.

Ice Dams

As you can imagine, cold temperatures and freezing water can do damage on the outside of the house as well. For instance, an ice dam can form along the edge of your roof along the gutter. This happens when the temperature of a higher section of the roof is above freezing while the lower part is below freezing. Snow will melt and run down the roof where it will freeze again. The ice forms a barrier blocking the flow of water off the roof. The hardening ice will often push the shingles of your roof out of place and allow water to seep down into the ceiling or attic below the roof. Water damage will continue until the ice dam is discovered and the affected area is repaired. Since ice dams are usually caused by heat escaping from the house, making sure your home is properly insulated can help reduce the risk of ice dam formation.
